FAQ

We have found that the best way to find out about our club is to come along and meet us. That said, you probably have some questions about Toastmasters International and our club that you would like to have answered before coming along. With that in mind, we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions. If you do not find an answer to your question here, please contact us and we will get back to you soon with an answer.

When and where do you meet?

Our meeting schedule is posted here.

What are the requirements for membership?

Our club is open to membership from all adult (18+) men and women of all backgrounds. We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, creed, nationality, colour, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability so long as the prospective member can, through their own effort, participate in our programme and activities.

Do I have to arrange an appointment before visiting?

Guests are always welcome at regular club meetings, if you let us know in advance of your plans to attend we can keep a special eye out for you.
As places are limited at our monthly dining meeting only members of Toastmasters clubs and their guests can normally attend. To ensure a place at the table please register with Bob in advance of the meeting.

How much does it cost?

We welcome guests at any of our meetings free of charge. If, after attending two meetings, you decide to join the joining fee is £20 followed by a monthly subscription fee of £10 per calendar month which we collect by Standing Order.
The fees cover the cost of membership which entitles you to your initial training manuals and later on two advanced manuals, the monthly Toastmasters International magazine, the opportunity to enter and attend Toastmasters events, including speech contests, in the wider area, including the Toastmasters International world convention each year if you wish to, as well as room hire and other club expenses.

Will I have to speak when I visit as a guest?

Absolutely not! As a guest you can simply listen to and enjoy the meeting and say nothing. Nobody will put pressure on you to speak. If you would like to, you will have a chance to introduce yourself, join in the Table Topics session and at the end of the evening you can share your thoughts on how you saw the evening and ask any questions you may have.

Will I be pressured to join?

Certainly not. We always welcome new members as we have found that, as well as learning from being a member, each person brings something of value to the club. You are free to attend as a guest for two meetings before deciding whether our group is for you.

How soon after joining can I make a speech?

Once you have joined, and feel ready, the club’s Vice President of Education (VPE) will arrange a space on the meeting schedule for you to deliver your “Ice-Breaker.” You will also have the opportunity to participate in other ways. We recognise and respect the fact that people progress at different paces.

What should I wear?

That’s entirely up to you. Some of our members comes to meetings directly from work wearing suits, however most come in smart casual clothes.

Will I enjoy my visit?

Oh yes, we certainly hope so anyway. We work hard to make all of our meetings enjoyable and educational. We believe that successful public speaking should be both entertaining and informative.

What else should I know?

Our about section provides more details about our club and Toastmasters International. Reading this will undoubtedly provide more understanding prior to your attendance as a guest.

Where can I find out more?

We link to some useful sites that you might find interesting and that may provide more information, including locations & times of other clubs meetings.
