Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18. The club is a member of Toastmasters International which is also a not for profit educational organisation that teaches communication and leadership skills through a worldwide network of over 10,500 clubs with almost 250,000 members in 90 countries. Since it was founded in 1923 it has helped more than three million people to speak with poise and confidence.
'Q' "What sort of people join Toastmasters"? 'A' If you look below you will see some of the members. Our membership hovers around 25 but varies as people join and others leave. Our meetings at the Oaks normally attract about three quarters of the membership on any given evening and about ten to twelve at the Wooden Fender.
How Toastmasters Works
Our club offers Toastmasters International’s proven and enjoyable method of improving, through practise, members communication and leadership skills.
Our meetings are effectively learn-by-doing workshops in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. One of the first things people notice is that there is no instructor in our meetings. Instead, using Toastmasters training materials, we evaluate and provide verbal and written feedback on each other contributions. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. In addition to prepared speeches, meeting participants are called upon to give an impromptu speech on a subject for which they have not prepared (members are expected to take up this challenge, guests can decline). Over time members will also be assigned each of the
meeting roles that contribute to a successful club meeting. Those interested in contributing to the smooth running of the club can join the committee in various officer roles. Various levels of recognition are awarded to members who complete the various requirements of the communication and leadership training programmes. Our programme is recognised by and supported by corporations and government departments across the world that have discovered that Toastmasters is an effective and cost-efficient means delivering communication & leadership training.
